Nail School — or Where I’ve Been for the Last Three Months

BannerHey all! It’s been way too long, hasn’t it? I want to apologize for the complete and utter absence. I figured I would take time to sit down and type out everything that’s happened.

For the last three years, I worked for a beauty supply that only sells to licensed professionals. It was a good transitional job — my original career path didn’t work out and the last five years, I’ve been bouncing around what I was going to do. This job not only allowed me access to amazing products (for cheap) to explore the nail hobby, but also had me building relationships with nail technicians.

Then, through Sarah at Chalkboard Nails, I discovered the Beauty Changes Lives | CND | Tippi Hedren Nail Scholarship, which is a wonderful thing that awards a scholarship to ten nail technician students. I decided to apply for the scholarship, and in turn, nail school.

The timing of everything was incredibly fast. Like, crazy fast. I applied for the school, applied for the scholarship, put in my two week’s notice at work, and then was suddenly full swing in nail school. The state of Florida only requires 240 hours for a nail technician, so the program is only two months old and before I knew it, I was in my last week of school when I was contacted by Beauty Changes Lives. I was chosen as one of the recipients of the scholarship and it was a wonderful end to my experience in nail school.

It’s been a month since I finished school, and I feel like I’m in limbo. The normal option is to find a spa to work in, usually a chain that will hire you as an employee and teach you the ropes. I’ve decided not to go that route, as most spas are strictly for natural nails. My goal is to find a nail salon that will take me under their wing and mentor me in acrylics and all the practical uses for what I learned in school. The timing is weird as it’s right before the holidays, but that’s what I’m looking for.

So. There’s the update! I’m still trying to get back into the swing of things — nail school took a lot out of me. I went to a school in the city, so it was an hour drive to and from school, as well as worked a couple hours after class everyday. I was pulling nonstop twelve-hour days and have been enjoying a well deserved break.

I also sustained some nasty nail breaks. I have some posts backlogged before school started that I’ll be getting to, but it might take me some time. Thank you so much for sticking with me thus far. I can’t wait to update you on what’s to come.

Congratulations on finishing nail school! I want to go myself but as a single mom I need my job & I just currently don’t see how both are possible. But I’m still planning on it! Hope everything works out for you! ❤

Thank you! It’s definitely a challenge to balance everything out and I can’t imagine as a single mom. However, if something opens up for you, I would take it. 🙂
